Elephant garlic produces small corms next to the giant bulbs. These corms are roughly about the size of a marble. Many people like to plant these, as it is a cheaper way to create a large elephant garlic crop. The first year these grow, they typically produce what is called a "round," a small single clove bulb that looks like an onion. The second year they produce a typical bulb with multiple cloves and larger size. Growing elephant garlic cloves is generally not recommended for beginners. They can have very low germination rates, and can take a long time to germinate, sometimes not until the following year. You can improve your results by carefully cracking the outer hull of the corm...don't crush the insides...to allow water to get inside quicker and trigger sprouting.I grow my garlic with no chemical pesticides or herbicides, and no manure fertilizers (to avoid ecoli). Natural fertilizers I use are a combination of leaves, fish emulsion, and/or seaweed extract.My feedback record speaks for itself.
