Born in North Hollywood, California, on April 26, 1941, David Knowlton III graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1963, later earning a Master's degree in Construction from Stanford in 1968. He served two tours-of-duty in Vietnam as an engineer (1965-66, 1968-69). Taught oil, watercolor, tempera, pencil and pen and ink techniques by his commercial artist father (his mother, Helen, was also a commercial artist), Knowlton began selling his work in the summer of 1964. In August 1975, he began painting full time. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Knowlton is renowned for his beautiful landscapes, waterscapes, lighthouses, et al.
