First erected in 1746, the Brant Point Light is America’s second oldest lighthouse. (Some rumors claim a bonfire existed there as early as 1700.) The Brant Point Light is only 26 feet tall, making it the shortest lighthouse in all of New England! Small but mighty, its red light flashes every four seconds, and is visible ten miles out. In 1987, Brant Point Light became a part of The National Register of Historic Places, placing itself in good company with Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House, Martin Luther King Jr.’s grave, the Wright Flyer III (the third plane of the Wright brothers), and thousands of other sites of significance. But life hasn’t always been rosy for this brave little beacon; the current structure is actually the 10th one that has sat at the location. As one might imagine, some were torn down by ferocious Nor’easters. Others were simply built cheaply. Two of them actually burned down; and still others rotted and were condemned. The existing structure has lasted for over 110 years and is emblematic above all; visitors toss a penny into the sea as they round the point leaving the harbor to ensure that they return someday to the Grey Lady’s welcoming arms. Artist's Statement- Growing up surrounded by water on Martha’s Vineyard, with a father who fished commercially in season, and mother who devoted her energies to conservation and open space preservation instilled in me a fascination with the sea and its moods, reverence for the natural world, and appreciation for the uniqueness of life lived slightly “offshore”. I began doodling at age two and, as the de facto artist in my class throughout elementary and high school, enjoyed sharing my vision and imagination with others— by inclination and disposition leaning more towards illustration than fine art. Heeding a teacher’s sage counsel that “the more you know, the more you know you don’t know”, I pursued a broad-based liberal arts education in college, majoring in art but expanding my horizons with a secondary focus on history (particularly maritime) and environmental studies. With a business card listing degrees of BA and NIA (Native Island Artist) I commenced a career, or facsimile thereof, doing pen-and-ink renderings of Vineyard homes in 1980. Two years later I published my first print, a whimsical waterfront “portrait” of Edgartown which was a smash hit, laying the groundwork for the sizable portfolio of prints, maps and cards now offered on this website. Commissioned work has run the gamut from book and architectural illustration to county fair posters, intricate jigsaw puzzles, museum installations and popular murals. Along the way I’ve enjoyed the freedom which self-employment provides to pursue my waterborne passions for open ocean rowing, ultra-distance kayaking, coastwise sailing, scalloping in season….and always reveling in “the view from offshore”.
