CTS Alnico magnet 5¼" mid/bass woofer with permanent surround, USA 1967

Description: Offered for your consideration is one (1) vintage CTS 5¼ inch Alnico magnet woofer made for Sylvania in 1967. CTS was a notable supplier to the domestic speaker industry from the late 1950’s to 1980’s. Per the EIA source/date code on the magnet cover, “137 750”, this driver was made by CTS (137) in the 50th week of 1967. So, please have a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this capable mid/bass driver is correct for your needs. This CTS driver is in clean, excellent overall condition. The sturdy seamed paper cone is structurally flawless, just a few barely legible handwritten factory notations, and so is the felt-covered voice coil dustcap. Also, the surround is permanent textile material instead of the fragile foam that would soon come into widespread use. And, the anodized steel basket is in nice shape with no dents or rust while the magnet cover has dust shields which add a nice touch. Lastly, the +/- terminals measure the standard .205”, are marked for polarity (red dot = pos), and have never been soldered on the spades. It presents quite nicely overall. More importantly, it’s been fully tested and sounds great with clear, fast midrange and good low end for the platform size. Plus, it has the warmth of tone these old Alnico drivers are known for. And, I tested the DC resistance at 6.4Ω consistent with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the basket measures 5¼” across (6” at corners), it stands roughly 2½” tall, and the mounting holes are spaced 3⅞” adjacent / 5½” diagonal apart, c-t-c. This is a great find if you need this same-pattern 5¼” driver as a replacement for your Sylvania or other domestic brand speaker.
