Description: This case has the same busy pictorial scene on the front and back. It’s a double case so it holds two ambrotypes. One of the ambrotypes is wonderful! THE CASE. This is case #1-12, 'American Country Life 2,' in Nineteenth Century Photographic Cases and Wall Frames, by Paul Berg. This is is case #8, 'American Country Life - Summer’s Evening,' in Union Cases, by Krainik, Krainik, and Walvoord. From Union Cases: "This wonderful rustic genre scene was taken from a section of a Nathaniel Currier (1813 - 1888) print. The illustration was drawn by Frances Flora Palmer and published in 1855 as a folio size lithograph, measuring approximately 17 by 24 inches. The die engraver selected the lower right quadrant of the Currier print as the basis for the case design. In the case design, the figure of the child has been enlarged and moved to the right of the house. Also, a number of butterflies have been added to the sky area. The engraver remained faithful to the print, however, and paid great attention to reproducing its details. The transposition of Currier lithograph to plastic case is a remarkable technical achievement. American Country Life is regarded by many collectors as one of the very finest case designs... Rare." The girl wears a blue dress. The boy wears a bowtie, jacket, bloomers, and feminine shoes. Some light spotting at right side. Good condition. Great colors. Wonderful interaction and posing. A gorgeous portrait.
