Description: People who don’t know this book that well, are probably thinking “Wow, that’s a really worn dust jacket!” TRUE! But, people who do know this very rare volume are likely thinking… “Oh my Gosh, I have never ever seen this book with the actual original dust jacket… ever!” That would also be TRUE! J Up for sale is a very nice and frankly exceptionally rare 1st printing copy, of Madison Grant’s very controversial “Conquest of a Continent, or the Expansion of Races In America". As just explained, it comes in the original dust jacket with 1/4th of the bottom front panel missing (more condition details below). The Scribner's “A” is on the copyright page. ABOUT THE BOOK & ITS ROLE IN HISTORY. Madison Grant advocated for eugenics policies in the US during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century’s. Grant argued that what he called the Nordic race, which originated from northwest Europe, was biologically and culturally superior to all other people, including other Europeans. Grant drew from his now-discredited claims to lobby for laws in the US that restricted immigration, legalized sterilizing people against their will, and prohibited interracial marriage. Adolf Hitler referred to Grant’s writings as “his bible” and he even wrote Grant a letter expressing his admiration. Grant's theories were also used as defense material during the Nuremberg Trials in the late 1940s as evidence that eugenics did not solely originate in Germany. CONDITION: The book itself is in nice solid Very Good condition, square and very clean internally. The dust jacket, with the price intact is in “Fair” condition. Aside from the front panel mentioned before, there is some paper loss to the tops of spines and light perimeter wear elsewhere. It is very fragile so I don’t dare take it out of its Mylar protector. Overall, considering the rarity, this is an exceptional copy… The implications, in part influenced by this book, for people in Europe during WWII were very serious.
