Description: Presented here is a Collectable Antique Wolf & Knell Hanau Silver Pub Scene Matchbox Holder This beautiful Hanau Silver antique matchbox holder features a 2.3” x 1.5” x 0.8” rectangular cube shape with a repousse image of men sipping beers at a pub table and a dog sleeping in the front. The sides of the case are cut out to access the striker portion of matchboxes. It is hallmarked with Wolf & Knell’s mark of G with a crown and another mark that appears like a version of a Maltese Cross. On the other side is a stamp that is too blurry to accurately read but looks like Germany (ny is quite clear). There are no silver marks but based on the period, it is quite likely .800 Silver. It weighs 23 grams and has a nice feel when held. Hanau silver has a complex history that began in the 19th century in the German city of Hanau. The city's silversmiths produced silver objects inspired by the Continental styles of the 16th–18th centuries, often reimagining the ornate and extravagant decorations. These pieces were often so well-made that they were exhibited at international expositions. Hanau's history as a free-trade city since the 16th century meant that it was exempt from duties on silver and regulated hallmarking. This allowed the city to develop a silver manufacturing industry that used fantasy hallmarks. Wolf & Knell was one of the known Hanau silversmiths that was founded in 1887 and merged in 1914 with Gebruder Glaser to form Vereinigte Silberwarenfabrik. This matchbox holder is signed with the Wolf & Knell hallmark indicating it from sometime between 1887-1914. Considering the age, the matchbox is in excellent pre-owned antique condition. The shape is well maintained. It was almost gray/black when I got it and had to lightly polish it to reveal the hallmarks. The insides have not been polished and are almost black with oxidation. There are two small cracks at the edges that do not extend to the inside (see orange arrows in pics). The back has a couple of light dings. The hallmarks are a little blurry but readable. The country mark is very blurry. This Wolf & Knell, Hanau Silver matchbox holder will make an admirable addition to any Antique Silverware collection.
