The Colgin winery, completed in 2002, is located at the northern end of IX Estate in the Pritchard Hill area of St. Helena, California. The state-of-the-art winery provides an inspiring view of Lake Hennessey. Winemaker Notes The 2006 vintage of our Cariad blend is a formidable wine. With big brooding aromas of grilled steak juices, roasted coffee grounds and tar, the wine certainly makes a big first impression. Given more time, one can begin to see that there is always more than meets the eye with our delicious Cariad blend. Fragrant aromas of spiced coffee cake, crushed rock and wet loamy earth come out as the wine is coaxed with air. The texture is both voluptuous and coating. 98 points Wine Advocate One of the stars of the vintage, this thrilling, opaque purple-colored wine offers up sweet espresso, jus de viande, blackberry, blueberry, flower and chocolate aromas. A fabulous texture, tremendous purity, sensational brightness and authoritative flavor intensity allied to striking complexity and elegance are the signature of this creative blend from the David Abreu vineyards of Thorevilos and Madrona Ranch. So much going on here, and the finish lasts for minutes. This is a symphony. (2/2011) 94 points Wine Spectator Aromas of ripe, complex currant, plum and black cherry show a dry, loamy earth edge on the palate. Full-bodied, deep and focused, this is well-structured, with chewy tannins and a long, lingering finish. (JL) (11/2009) 93 points Vinous Good saturated medium ruby. Complex but reticent nose hints at minerals, dried herbs, sweet spices, hot gravel and tobacco. Quite closed but very deep on the palate, with an exotic spice quality (cardamom?) lifting the powerful dark fruit and menthol flavors. This very broad, classically dry wine reminded me of a top claret from the Medoc-and with its rather powerful tannins it may well age like a Bordeaux.
