Description: Civil War Vet & Eastern State Penitentiary Warden DW Bussinger Signed Prison Doc Two original 1901 singed receipts related to horse thieves Horace and Jacob Cohn. Both men were convicted in Lycoming County and were fined $5.00. Each document (2) is signed by the man convicted as well as Eastern State Penitentiary Warden Daniel W. Bussinger. Bussinger was a Civil War veteran. At the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, in the Civil War, Mr. Bussinger, a volunteer in the Tenth Pennsylvania Reserves, was captured and imprisoned in Libby and Andersonville Prisons. Several years after the war, he was chief witness at the trial of Henry Wirz, commandant of Andersonville, his testimony being largely responsible for the death sentence meted out to Wirz. After his return from the war, he became active in politics and civic life, serving in the Philadelphia Custom House and the office of the Controller. Later he was clerk of the Eastern Penitentiary for twenty-six years until his appointment as warden. I am unable to find an exact date, but it seems Bussinger was Warden from 1899 to about 1904. Items related to Bussinger and his time at Eastern State Penitentiary are exceedingly rare. Here we have two nice examples of his signature.
