Description: CIVIL WAR PERIOD HAND MADE FOLK ART TIN BLUE JAPANNED TOBACCO POCKET CONTANER ANTIQUE CIVIL WAR PERIOD SCARCE HAND MADE FOLK ART TIN DARK BLUE JAPPANING TOBACCO POCKET CONTAINER This is a scarce, personal size handmade tin container that dates to around the Civil War Period. During the American Civil War period, almost all men used tobacco of some sort, including the majority common foot soldiers on both sides. These well-made containers were originally inexpensive and appealed to the common man; and wert mostly used to carry snuff or loose tobacco for pipe smoking. These tin containers are completely handmade and is held together with lead solder; and were made in different sizes, features, and finish. This piece as a dark blue Japanning finish. As expected, there is some wear and loss to the finish; however, it is in very good condition considering it is around 150+ year old utilitarian object that was intended for daily use. The bottom has a lot of wear and some very light rust. Japanning is most often a heavy black "lacquer", almost like enamel paint. Black is common and japanning is often assumed to be synonymous with black japanning. The European technique uses varnishes that have a resin base, similar to shellac, applied in heat-dried layers which are then polished, to give a smooth glossy finish. More unusual, it can also come in reds, greens, and blues. The sides are a single piece of tin soldered together, and the top and bottom have a small outside border crimp that the sides fit into and are lead soldered. The top has a large oval hole with the parameter serving as a sealing surface for the wider top that acts as an apron to secure the contents and seal to the top of the base. The tin top has a simple 3-part piano style hinge with the back of the base acting as a stop for the top at 90 degrees. The top has a simple angled protrusion in front that engages with the spring like tip outside border rim and closes securely with a pronounced click. The size is about 4 1/4” wide x 2 ¾” deep x 1 1/8” tall and weighs 2.1 ounces or 63 grams. Overall, with a nice, even naturally occurring aged patina to the tin, in original, as found condition. This would fit into any Civil War Period, Tobacciana, snuff, pipe, or Folk-Art collection.
