Description: STK: #SWORD-GAPBrought to you by CAMARILLO TRADERS specialists in new, used & antique arms, collectible militaria and rustic ephemera Civil War US Federal M1860 34.5" Blade Ames As. Co. Chicopee Mass. Light Cavalry Saber Sword & Metal Scabbard Manufacturer: Ames Manufacturing Co., As. Co. Model: M1860 Blade Length: 34.50" Serial/Rack #: N/A TEXT GOES HERETEXT GOES HERE --> Offered here is Civil War Model 1860 Cavalry saber sword and scabbard. These swords were used from the American Civil War until the end of the Indian Wars. They are sometimes known as the M1862 swords because that is when the first 800 were issued. It replaced the heavier M1840 heavy Cavalry saber. Approximately 300,000 swords were manufactured for the Civil War. Several manufactures produced them like Ames, Roby, Tiffany & Co., Glaze, Justice and Emerson & Silver. There are a few differences between an M1840 and M1860 sword. The M1840 has a .25" wider blade and is 1.5" longer. The M1840 grip is straight sided and the M1860 has a bulge. Lastly, the M1840 wire wrap covers all the exposed leather and on the M1860 it stops short at the forward edge of the pommel. Overall, this sword is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age and history. The pommel and knuckle-bow guard are securely fastened to the hilt. They have scattered impact marks, oxidation, scrapes and verdigris. The brass finish has turned many different patina colors. The leather grip has a few small pieces missing. The leather has dried out and there are a few compressions and cracks. The braided brass chord is securely fastened around the grip but is slightly loose probably because the leather has shrunk with time. There are no broken pieces. The coloring is a darker gold patina color. The blade's spine, fullers and sides have light erosion and scrapes. There are a few light nicks and dings on the blade's cutting edge, almost not worth mentioning. It appears to have its original factory edge, there are a few light scrapes but we think it is from the scabbard. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp bent point. The bent part is approximately 1/8". The finish in the white and has started to turn a darker patina color. The left ricasso is marked "AMES MFG / CHICOPEE / MASS" and some of the letters are slightly worn down. The right ricasso is marked "U.S. / LHK(?) / 1864" with some of the letters hard to read. The scabbard is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age and history. The suspension ring mounts and rings are securely fastened to the body. The rings both rotate and swivel correctly. There are scattered impact marks, oxidation and scrapes. There is one large impact mark, but it does NOT effect the sword going in and out. The metal has turned a darker plum patina color. There are no visible markings on the scabbard's drag. This sword and scabbard will be a great addition to your American Civil War era collection, or a sword collection in general.
