His cousin is 16 and they write each other. The letters begin in July 1863 after he is wounded. He is wounded in the shoulder at the Battle of Chancellorsville and sent to a hospital in Baltimore. After a month he is almost recovered and many wounded from the Battle of Gettysburg pour into the hospital. He assists the medial staff. He is eventually reassigned to the VRC Veteran Reserve Corp and continued to work in the hospital. The book is filled with letters back and forth between he and his distant cousin. There are some gaps in the letters because he burned a lot of letters in the summer of 1864 when he thought the Confederates were going to take Baltimore. The letters paint a good picture of life in New Jersey and Baltimore during the war.
