Description: This Bronze Wine Cup is from the Chien Lung period in China. The Qianlong Emperor ruled from 1736 to 1795. During this period the Chinese continued to make Bronze Wine Cups and favored the Zhou style which was more slender and elegant, than the Shang Dynasty style. It was bought in Hong Kong in the 1950s by my father from a reputable antique dealer. The dealer indicated it was not Zhou Dynasty but rather a Chien Lung copy of the style. In those days these so called Chien Lung copies were being mis-represented by some dealers as Zhou for the obvious reason the could sell them for more coin. This example was beautifully cast in bronze. The patina is exquisite and has a wonderful green tone which I hope translates in the pictures. The rough spots on the wine cup which are not flaws but efforts made to blemish the patina to look much older than Chien Lung. Beware and take note that many of the wine cups being sold today are 20th century copies of the same style, and not even Chien Lung.
