Description: In the late 1970s, a few publishers began specializing in chess books (RHM and Batsford especially) purposely concentrating on material fit for higher-rated players. John Watson made his mark with this 4-volume set (offered is the first of the series) on the English Opening by his encyclopedic coverage of pretty much every logical move of every sub-variation. After this, he turned his attention on the French Defence---a work which became the main reference for that opening, going through 4 editions, covering 20 years' worth of ideas, sometimes which did away with his previous recommendations. With his reputation secured as a top writer, he then wrote two smash-hits books on the changes to strategic theory since Nimzowitsch, and then another 4-volume set covering ALL openings (which were more text explanation than detailed sub-variations). All in all, his works are perfect for all players up to 2200. His stated philosophy for opening books is that one only understands it by comparing ALL sub-variations, so he purposely gets very detailed. Offered is book 3 of the 4 on Watson's walk through all major openings, here covers the English Opening---so could be a update to his 4-volume series written 20 years earlier! Unlike that detailed-variations look, here he has well-analyzed games with mountains of explanation, chess philosophy, and advice. Figurine algebraic notation. Index of players and openings. 351 pages. Come back often as I am liquidating a large collection. I do refund excess shipping paid when you buy mutiple items.
