CHARLESTON SOUTH CAROLINA MORRIS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE POSTCARD Aerial View Beacon

Description: CHARLESTON SOUTH CAROLINA MORRIS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE POSTCARD Aerial View Beacon Built in 1767 at the southern entrance to Charleston, the original tower was destroyed during the Civil War. The new tower, built in 1876, is 161 ft. with 201 steps leading to its top. It is the tallest lighthouse in South Carolina. The beacon was extinguished in 1962. The red and white striped tower is visible from James Island and Folly Beach. In September of 1989, Hurricane Hugo destroyed the last of the remaining buildings that were located near the lighthouse on Morris Island. The lighthouse is surrounded by water now, but at one time there were approximately 15 buildings including a schoolhouse, smaller cottages, a boathouse, chicken coops, barns and Beacon House. Beacon House was a large residence where generations of lighthouse keepers, their families and some assistants lived. This postcard is a beautiful view of Morris Island Lighthouse and the surrounding area, Charleston Harbor and the green Spartina Grass of Spring and Summer.
