CHARLES SUMNER - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 09/23/1861 - HFSID 101554 CHARLES SUMNER Signed autograph letter from Boston early in the Civil War, declining an invitation Autograph Letter signed: "Charles Sumner", 1 page, 4½x7. Boston, 1861 September 23. To Joseph F. Hart, in full: "I fear that other engagements will prevent me from taking advantage of the opportunity with which you honor me. Accept my thanks & believe me dear sir, Faithfully yours". Charles Sumner (1811-1874) represented Massachusetts in the US Senate from 1851 until his death. Elected under the banner of the Free Soil Party, he joined the Republican Party soon after its 1854 foundation. Sumner's fiery rhetoric against slavery and against what he believed to be slavery's domination of the US government so incited South Carolina Congressman Preston Brooks that he brutally caned Sumner, who was sitting at his Senate desk, into unconsciousness (1856). Sumner spent three years recuperating, during which Massachusetts defiantly re-elected him, and then returned as a leader of the militant wing of the Republican Party during the Civil War and Reconstruction. He was Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee (1861-1871). Left edge ragged. Some bleeding of ink. Pencil note (unknown hand) at lower margin. Heavily soiled.
