Description: Nice-Pre-Owned / Ceremonial Apron Married Women's "Mapoto" Ndebele Tribe, South Africa / Leather & Beads / Vintage / 1900 - 1950's / Measures: Approximately 22" Long x 18" Wide / in Great Vintage Condition. Note: There may be some loose beads (very few) and some stitching on top is loose. Note: This Apron will be rolled when shipped. Paper will be put on top of the beading and then rolled to protect the beading. Then rolled again in more paper and then bubble wrapped; then shipped in a carton "box". History: The Mapoto Traditionally was worn daily by the Ndebele woman in South Africa indicating her Marital Status. Fashioned of Goatskin or canvas and embroidered with beads in unique patterns. The side panels symbolize the marriage partners and the tassels, the expectation of the children the women will bear. A general daily usage item. The Mapoto (apron) were made and gifted by a Brides In-Laws. These Mapoto (Aprons) are full of symbolism and the colors and patterns were often regional intimate references to family and status. The lower flaps represent the two families being joined together in marriage. The intricate fringe between the panels symbolizes the wish for many children.Fast Ship!
