CEN Hart MI 1908 RPPC Gurney Roller Flour/Grain Mill, also called the Oceana Mills, on the Pentwater River with a Dam and Mill Pond. The Mill Pond is an impoundment for the mill as the river rises east of Hart at the inflow of the South Branch Pentwater River and flows northwest to Lake Michigan. The Gurney Roller Mill Company made Flour & Grist. On July 23, 1912, a FLOOD DISASTER caused by a devastating FLOOD & CYCLONE damage in Hart at the Gurney Grist Mill which caused the Mill Pond and Road Bridge (Main Street) to collapse! Hart was settled after a sawmill was built, early on; built by Lyman B. Corbin. The sawmill and later, other planing mills and a stave manufacturing wood products mills soon followed. Hart was founded in 1856 by Nelson Grove and other settlers. They named the township after Wellington Hart, but the town is said to have named itself “Hart” because it's located in the “heart” of Oceana County. 1862.
