Description: A collection of Civil War artifacts excavated near the Cedar Creek Battlefield north of Winchester, Virginia. These are part of an older collection found by a local resident of Winchester. Most of these were found in fields evidenced by the greenish patina which indicates fertilizer being used over the years. The artifacts at right are part of a shoulder epaulette; the pan, scales and the folded up underside which went through a cloth tab on the uniform. The broken spur and .52 Spencer casings and rounds are Federal issue. At lower left is a sword drag, five Federal issue “Eagle buttons worn on the cavalry shell jacket and a carbine cleaner above. The small piece at top center is all that’s left of a cavalry hat insignia; a sword handle. Winchester was a key strategic position for the Confederate States Army during the war. It was an important operational objective in Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's and Jackson's defense of the Shenandoah Valley in 1861, Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign of 1862, the Gettysburg Campaign of 1863, and the Valley Campaigns of 1864. Including minor cavalry raids and patrols, and occasional reconnaissance by various forces, it is claimed that Winchester changed hands as many as 72 times during the course of the war, and 13 times in one day. Battles raged all along Main Street at different points in the war. Both Union General Sheridan and Stonewall Jackson located their headquarters just one block apart at various times. The artifacts come as shown in an 8” x 14” riker style case. Some of the artifacts will be packed separately to protect the glass. You can move the relics around to your liking. There are two layers of batting in the case; for some of the deeper artifacts it’s best to cut out some of the bottom batting (less pressure on the glass). All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. The documents pictured will also come with the set. Please see our "About” on front page for more information on the framing and artifacts.
