Description: Here's a standard sized carte de visite, 2 3/8" x 3 7/8", of Horace Greeley most likely just at the time he became the "Democratic and Liberal Republican" presidential candidate back in 1872. We've listed a bunch of Greeley photos to show how he physically changed over the years. This shows him with those unique, now more-bushy, under-the-chin whiskers and he's really filling out. Hey, what's the use in becoming a prosperous American male if you don't show off your middle-age spread? Of course, that may be one of the reasons he died at age 61. At least in this image he looks like he's having some fun as there's a slight grin present. On election day, he wouldn't have been caught smiling. Having been a life-long Whig and republican party member, many people mocked him for his 1872 political opportunism, including Thomas Nast in cartoons on the pages of Harper's Weekly. Greeley had a terrible year that year: his wife died just before the election, he got his clock cleaned by President Ulysses Grant in early November, and he died within a month from then, a broken man and railing against Whitelaw Reid who had taken control of Greeley's New York Tribune. This is in nice condition but please look at our images to judge condition for yourself so you can be happy with your purchase. There are some clipped corners but remember this stuff's called ephemera, folks, since it was made to be used and then discarded. So, we're just lucky to have things like this in any condition to add to our collections. We are members of APIC and sell only authentic presidential (and other collectible) material so buy with confidence. We'll be happy to combine S & H costs on multiple purchases even though eBay says we won't. We just issue a refund for any overpayment.
