Description: Antique / vintage CT Childers' Rapid Washer early clothes washer, laundry agitator. Innovative for its time, it was used to agitate the clothes when placed in a bucket of soapy water, then dump that, get clean water, and use for the rinse. Handle is a little over 21" long, and the cone is about 8 1/4" across. Handle is solid, cone has some surface rust and is dinked on one side, still has the original price marked on it, which appears to be 90 cents. THE STORY: This belonged to a man that was a longtime funeral director and embalmer, and he told me that this was kept in the funeral home in case the electricity went out and they had to have some way to wash the linens. He said it was never used, and it could have rusted just sitting, but the price still being on it (written with a grease pencil), tends to support the idea that at least it wasn't used much.
