Description: This is a Genuine, Original, signed letter by Captain Arthur H. Rostron, KBE, RD RNR, (1869-1940) turning down a lucrative offer from the Ponds Agency, NYC, to become a lecturer. It is unkown for certain why Capain Rostron turned down such a Lucrative offer. Perhaps he didn't feel right about profting from the Titanic disaster. Letter of provinence will be included in this sale. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of undiscovered history from one of the most compelling events in history, and by one of the key figures in that event. It comes from the private collection of an American Medal of Honor winner. A Crisp clear signature, and on his home, embossed, letterhead, (Holmecroft, Chalk Hill, West End Hants,) in very good condition. There are a couple of small minor stains to the second leaf, and the letter ahs been folded once for mailing. The letter measures 7 inches high by 4 1/2 inches wide. It is dated August 5, 1931, the year that Captain Rostron retired. Of course my Watermark is not on the original. I will include priority mail with insurance for the value of the item included. Now for the Particulars: Sir Arthur Henry Rostron, KBE, RD, RNR(14 May 1869 – 4 November 1940) was a British merchant seaman and a seagoing officer for the Cunard Line He is best known as the captain of the ocean liner RMS Carpathia, when it rescued the survivors from the TMS Titanic after the ship sank in 1912 in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean.Rostron won wide praise for his energetic efforts to reach the Titanic before she sank, and his efficient preparations for and conduct of the rescue of the survivors. He was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal by the United States Congress, and in 1926, he was appointed Kinght Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He rose to become the Commodore of the Cunard fleet and retired in 1931. About the Ponds Agency: James B. Pond June 11, 1838 - June 21, 1903 Medal of Honor Winner, US Army, American Civil WarIn 1874, Pond purchased the Lyceum Theatre Lecture Bureau and embarked on a career managing speakers. In 1879, he moved his main office to New York City. In addition to Mark Twain's 1884–85 tour, Pond managed the North American stage of the worldwide lecture tour the author undertook in 1895–96 to pay off his enormous debts. He also promoted Winston Churchill's first American tour, though the two had a falling out and Churchill referred to Pond as "a vulgar Yankee impresario." Explorer and journalist Henry Morton Stanley earned $60,000 (~$1.86 million in 2023) for an 1890–91 U.S. tour set up by Pond. Other clients included P. T. Barnum, Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, Arthur Coana Doyle, Ellen Terry,] and Harriett Ward Beecher Pond wrote a book entitled Eccentricities of Genius (1900), in which he reminisced about his experiences with his famous clients. James B. Pond, Jr, (1889 - 1961) succeeded his father as head of the Pond Bureau. He was the man who offerred Captain Rorstron the contract to lecture. We were very busy while in your most hospitable country & been very busy since my return. I'm afraid I could not consider your proposition as I am not a lecturer and as were were only in America for six daysyou will understand it was impossible to consider your offer then.
