The Chimes ; A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year Out and a New Year In By Charles Dickens With reproductions of the Original Illustrations by C. Stanfield and W. J. Linton Written while Dickens was living in Genoa, Italy; he confessed that he missed the inspiration of the London streets at this time in his life. The story centers around Trotty Veck, a poor elderly ticket porter ( a casual messenger ), who is in despair over the crime, greed and immorality he sees in the city and in his own difficult circumstances. On New Year's Eve night, Trotty hears bells that seem to call to him. Entering a church, he finds the tower door unlocked and climbs to the bellchamber, where he discovers the spirits of the bells and their goblin attendants who restore his faith in man's destiny to improve. This story, like " A Christmas Carol ," was written by Dickens with a message in mind. The chiming bells represent time. The story points to three wrongs which must be corrected : 1. The error of harking back to a golden age that never really was, instead of striving to improve conditions here and now. 2. The error of believing that individual human joys and sorrows do not matter to a higher power. 3. The error of condemning those who are fallen and unfortunate, and offering them neither help nor pity. Through the character of Trotty, Dickens exhorts the reader to not fall into these snares. ----------------- 2. A Christmas Carol in Prose , Being a Ghost Story of Christmas With reproductions of the Original Illustrations by John Leech , from the Original Edition by Chapman & Hall , London A beloved Christmas story for which no introduction is needed; for millions of people, this story perfectly captures the true spirit of Christmas. The tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas, with Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and other memorable characters. In December of 1843, the first edition sold out completely in less than one week. The first silent film adaptation was made in the year 1901. A Christmas Carol recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly, wealthy miser who is visited first by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and then by spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. The spirits force Scrooge to see the truth and the consequences of his mean-spirited life. After their visits, Scrooge is awakened into a kinder, gentler and more generous man. All persons in Scrooge's life benefit from the transformation; above all, Scrooge himself. ----------------- Carefully packed for shipment to the buyer.
