Description: DESCRIPTION - c.1899/1900 Rochester Optical Company 5x7 Pony Premo No. 6 camera with Victor Rapid Rectilinear lens in Victor “Flat-Top” design shutter. The lens is composed of two symmetrical combinations and may be used as a compound lens or a single Achromatic lens. The camera features a swing back, rack & pinion focusing, reversible back for landscape of portrait formats, removable lens board and a wood side-bed finder. The camera sold for $40 in 1899 - that is over $1,500 today. Serial Number – 145264. The Pony Premo No.6 camera appeared in Rochester Optical Company (ROC) catalogues in 1899 with the side-bed wood finder and the Victor “flat-top” shutter. In the 1901 catalog, the side-bed finder changed design and the Victor shutter was replaced with the Auto Shutter and a new selection of lens/shutter combinations. CONDITION – This is a superb display example of this camera model. Please note that a “bright-light” check of the bellows detected three pinholes. I suspect there are others not located. If you want to use this camera for photography, careful application of liquid electrical tape is a possible solution (see YouTube) – a buyer of a similar camera successfully used the approach. Also, the shutter fires very nicely, but shutter speeds are not accurate – the slow speeds are sluggish.
