c. 1860 Horstmann / Weyersberg - KNIGHTS TEMPLAR Sword

Description: This fine Knights Templar sword and scabbard belonged to T.W. Riley whose name is engraved on the scabbard, and his intertwined monogram is on the grip. It was made by William H. Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia which is marked on the ricasso. The king's-head marking on the other side of the ricasso indicates that this blade was made by Weyersberg of Solingen which was essentially a family sword-making dynasty. Prior to and during the Civil War, Horstmann & Sons used many Weyersberg's blades on its higher grade swords. This 28.5" blade has high quality etching in gold with a pattern featuring Knights Templar motifs. There's no damage to the blade except for some corrosion to the chrome finish at its end, as shown in my photo. The handle has a brass helmeted knight's head for a pommel and it has a grip made of simulated ivory. One side of the grip features a cloisonné, red cross, set within metal outlines. There's a small chip in the cloisonné surface, as shown in my photos. On the opposite side of the grip is a beautiful, scrimshaw-type engraving of the owner's monogram. The brass cross guard is firm with no movement. The 30" black japanned brass scabbard, has three hanger rings and is decorated with applied, sculptural mounts at each ring station. Its length on one side is engraved with Knights Templar motifs and it ends with an elaborate brass shoe. Much of the japanning has worn off of the scabbard; it can be seen best beneath this shoe. There are no dents or cracks in the scabbard and everything is firmly attached. The sword slides easily into the scabbard and fitted together, their length is 37.75". Total weight: 2 lbs.
