This is understandable, as no jacket with a label sewn onto the AN-J-3, which could be said to be the jacket's business card, has ever been found. A search of documents from that time shows that the AN-J-3A was developed in the early 1940s for common use by both the Army and Navy, but it was ultimately adopted only by the Navy, and never by the Army Air Corps. The AN-J-3 was reverted to a mouton collar in its successor model, the AN-J-3A, and the label was securely sewn on. Later, the Army Air Corps changed the AN-J-3A model, which had not been adopted as leather, to cloth, and hastily developed the B-10 in the mid-range zone, which was lightweight and had excellent warmth retention. The AN-J-3 was characterized by a leather collar instead of the boa collar seen on the M-422 up to that time, and by an appearance similar to that of the A-2 for the front and the M-422 for the back. The existence of several variations, such as with or without a front placket and with or without epaulettes, also leaves much mystery.
