Brumby Innes and Bid Me To Love: Two plays by Katharine Susannah Prichard Paperb

Description: Brumby Innes and Bid Me To Love: Two plays by Katharine Susannah Prichard, Ric Throssell Two plays by Katharine Susannah Prichard written in the 1920s. FORMAT Paperback CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description I consider Brumby Innes to be in a class by itself wrote theatre director Gregan McMahon in 1927. It is a very remarkable work, comparable to some of the best of Eugene ONeills, and it is, moreover, essentially Australian.Written in the 1920s, Brumby Innes confronts the turbulent relations between the sexes and the races in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is published with another Prichard play from the 1920s, Bid Me To Love, set in fashionable white rich society in the lush hills outside Perth. The two plays are compelling for their dramatic styles and for their insight into the novels which followed: Coonardoo and Intimate Strangers. This new edition includes introductions from Maryrose Casey and Jacqueline Wright. Author Biography KATHARINE SUSANNAH PRICHARD (1883–1969) was born in Levuka, Fiji, where her father was editor of the Fiji Times. She matriculated from South Melbourne College and worked briefly as a governess. She later taught in Melbourne studying English literature at night. In 1908 she travelled to London, working as a freelance journalist for the Melbourne Herald and, on her return, as the social editor of the Heralds womens page. In 1912 she again left for England to pursue a career as a writer and published two novels, The Pioneers and Windlestraws. From the 1920s until her death she lived at Greenmount, Western Australia, earning her living as a writer of novels, short stories and plays. Her novels include Black Opal, Working Bullocks, The Wild Oats of Han, Coonardoo, Haxbys Circus, Intimate Strangers, and the Goldfields trilogy: The Roaring Nineties, Golden Miles, and Winged Seeds. Prichard was a member of the Communist Party of Australia until her death, and her political concerns were reflected in most of her published work. Her novels were published throughout the world and translated into numerous languages. In 1951 she was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature.RIC THROSSELL (1922–1999) was born in Western Australia, the only child of writer Katharine Susannah Prichard and Captain Hugo Throssell, V.C. After education at Wesley College he saw war service in New Guinea during World War II. In 1943 he joined the Department of External Affairs. He was a leading advocate and activist for Australian theatre from 1945 to 1966, especially through the Canberra Repertory Society where he was an actor, producer and writer. Throssell wrote twenty-six plays, most of which have been widely performed, particularly The Day Before Tomorrow. He published a biography of his mother, Wild Weeds and Wind Flowers and an autobiography My Fathers Son, and has edited two collections of his mothers writings Straight Left and Tribute: selected stories of Katharine Susannah Prichard. Review I consider Brumby Innes to be in a class by itself wrote theatre director Gregan McMahon in 1927.
