He studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with Luigi Piccioli and then went to Milan where he studied with Giovanni Corsi. His adopted stage name was a tribute to his teacher. He made his debut in 1868 in Turin, heading back to Russia in 1869 where he was contracted with the Imperial Opera in St. Petersburg until 1882, when he joined the Bolshoi where he sung until 1904. In Moscow he created the local premieres of numerous operas, sharing the first performances of the title role of Boris Godunov with Khohklov, Tomsky in "Pikova Dama", the title role of "The Demon", Dunois in "Maid of Orleans", and the title role of Saint-Saens "Henry VIII". He created the title role of Tchaikovsky's "Mazeppa" at the Bolshoi World Premiere, as well as the title role of Rachmaninov's "Aleko in 1893. One of his other World Premieres was the Devil in Tchaikovsky's "Cherevichki ", He was also a Verdi baritone, Rigoletto, Iago, Germont and Di Luna were among his Verdi roles.
