Description: Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres by Hugh Blair. Published by Baynes and Son, etal, London, 1823. Hugh Blair was "One of the ministers of the high church and professor of rhetoric and Belles Lettres in the University of Edinburgh." From Wikipedia: " Belles Lettres is a category of writing, originally meaning beautiful or fine writing. In the modern narrow sense, it is a label for literary works that do not fall into the major categories such as fiction, poetry, or drama. The phrase is sometime used pejoratively for writing that focuses on the aesthetic qualities of language rather than its practical application."Very good, later edition. First printed in two volumes in 1783 and with a number of editions after that. Original blue paper covered boards, professionally repaired as to spine, partial original paper label. Boards are soiled and stained overall, label is barely legible. Board edges are rubbed through in several places, especially on and adjacent to the fore-edge corners. Side and lower page edges are untrimmed, all edges have foxing and are age- and soil-darkened. Damp stains on the lower margins to many of the pages, heaviest on the back end-papers - see photo. Foxing is most obvious on the first and last several pages. Text block is sound. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions.
