BLACK NOON (1971; TV Movie)Old West preacher Roy Thinnes and his wife are rescued from a near-death experience by Ray Milland and his townfolk, who happen-by, fortuitously, to bring the couple to Ray’s home for recuperation. Yvette Mimieux plays Milland’s mute daughter, an enigmatic creature who gives Thinnes second thoughts about leaving the odd little town of San Melas; in fact, everyone there wants him to stay on and take over duties at their soon-to-be-rebuilt church. Mrs. Thinnes (Lynn Loring), bedridden with mysterious symptoms that fail to keep her from noticing her husband’s interest in Yvette, begs him to continue their journey and leave the town. But…is it already too late? And what are those weird nightmares the preacher can’t shake?Wait for the best line in the movie, from Milland: “We’re not from Connecticut.” Gloria Grahame has an unworthy role as Loring’s “nurse,” but it’s nice to see her. Henry Silva has fun as a black-clad outlaw. You may want to replay Thinnes’ first attempt at sermonizing, to his flock; it’s over-emotingly bad (Shatner-esque, even!)
