Description: Beautiful print measures 10-1/2" x 15-1/2" (image) and 15-1/2" x 21" (framed). Bessie was famous for illustrating infant children. This adorable print depicts a infant child sleeping with a teddy bear.Bessie Pease Gutmann was born Bessie Collins Pease in Philadelphia in 1876 and spent most of her childhood in Mount Holly, New Jersey. She lived during the Golden Age of Illustration which ran from 1890 -1925. Illustration was one of the few fields accessible to women artists during this period of time and Gutmann became known as one of the foremost women illustrators. Gutmann was formally trained at the prestigious Philadelphia School of Design for women in 1893. She was part of a long list of accomplished alumni including Jessie Wilcox Smith, Charlotte Harding Brown, Gertrude Alice Kay, and Harriet Sartain. Among the faculty was Alice Barber Stephens who greatly influenced Gutmann's work. The "Father of Illustration",Howard Pyle, critiqued Stephen's work, so in a round-about way Pyle may have also influenced Gutmann. Finishing classes in Philadelphia in 1894, Gutmann then became a student of the newly founded New York School of Art begun by renowned American impressionist William Merritt Chase. Gutmann attended classes taught by this great artist. In 1899, Gutmann enrolled in the famous Art Students' League of New York. Here she met fellow student Bernhardt Gutmann. Bernhardt was in the process of opening an art publishing business with his brother, Hellmuth. This was a trade that was thriving during the boom of illustration art and they convinced Bessie, as a wonderful illustration artist, to join them in their venture. This became a long and successful career during which Bessie became famous for her art, particularly for her drawings of infants, children, beautiful women, and cherubs. In 1906, Bessie married Hellmuth. Their marriage lasted 42 years and there were three children. At this time in history, women artists were most often single women so successfully combining motherhood and career was another accomplishment for Gutmann. Besides art prints, Gutmann created images for advertising, calendars, children's books, and postcards. During her lifetime, she created over 600 artworks in a variety of mediums. The emphasis of her paintings was usually on a main subject with the background often muted and simplified. Her works took on a luminescence as she often worked with watercolors and washes over charcoal. Gutmann died in 1960 at the age of 84. In her later years, her eyesight had failed her and her works were limited. When thinking back on the career of Bessie Pease Gutmann, it is universally agreed that the subject of her artwork remains timeless and, to this day, her artwork leads the viewer into a gentle world....
