Description: Disc 4 is in my Player (last photo). Sound is spectacular. Many of the great quartets that had been around for a while recorded sets of Beethoven again when Stereo became available. Problem was the players were in some cases past their prime. Oh, the stereo sets are good, but it's not unusual to find comparisons that favor the earlier sets. Anyway, I already own this set with all 16 quartets. So this is a double. Now, there's generally 3 groups of LVB quartets: Early, Middle, Late. And here's the lowdown if you are new to this music, which incidentally is considered the intellectual Mt Everest of Classical Music. The 6 early quartets are often underestimated or dismissed because LVB hadn't reached his prime and was still emulating Haydn and Mozart. I was guilty of that. But those composers wrote fabulous string quartets and Beethoven adds his own special magic anyway. So actually, all six are delightful. MIDDLE: Usually considered numbers 7 through 11, so you're getting 4 of the 5. And 11, called by Beethoven the Seriouso, is actually more appropriately grouped with the Late Quartets, at least in terms of style: it just was written earlier. So about those Late Quartets...they are the highest peaks of that intellectual mountain and frankly, best built up to. That is to say, difficult, hard to appreciate initially. Lovely moments of course. All I'm saying is numbers 7, 8, 9, and 10 are easy to love, indeed will sweep you off your feet, by comparison.
