Buy with confidence. ~~~~~~~~~ I thought it might be fun to share a bit of Beatles research I ran across after obtaining this copy of the Beatles White Album with a low number. There are three points I learned:1. Misprints 2. Stamped Numbers 3. Etched matrix numbers 1. MISPRINTS First a word on “misprints” and why they are important when determining the value of a vinyl record. Misprints are a strong indicator that your record is an original pressing. The logic being that once the original pressing is distributed, placed in store bins, purchased and people read the labels, jacket (aka cover, envelope, etc.) and inner sleeves, mistakes naturally are reported back. So, on the next printing run, most, if not all, the misprints are corrected. As an example, the Beatles White Album has seven known errors: Here are all 7 song errors on the labels: CORRECTED?1. Side 1: "Bungalow Bill" instead of "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill” Y2. Side 1: "Obladi Oblada" instead of "Ob-la-di Ob-la-da” Y3. Side 2: "Rocky Racoon" missing the second "C" in Raccoon N4. Side 4: "Goodnight" instead of "Good Night" Y5. Side 4: "Revolution No. 1" instead of "Revolution 1" Y6. Side 4: "Revolution No. 9" instead of "Revolution 9" Y7. (The rarest of all 7 label errors) Side 2: "Why Don't we do it in the road" without the question mark (?) Y This record all these errors had been corrected, except the "Racoon" spelling. 2. STAMPED NUMBERS Now about the stamped numbers. If you have a copy of the White Album that has embossed (raised letters and no ink) saying “The BEATLES” and has a stamped number, then it is a first release. The next release had the embossed “The BEATLES” still with no ink, and no numbers. The lowest number that I have personally and physically observed has been six digits, i.e. like 0123,456, with no leading letter. I have also seen other copies with a leading “No.” or an “A” in front of the digits. My personal copy purchased the first day it hit The Crystal Ship’s (Eugene Oregon) bins has “0186769”. This record has “0009266”. For the music lovers in the crowd (aka non-collectors), this next bit is over the top detailed and probably best used only as a reference. Many thanks to my good friend Mike Martin for finding this on Planetary Sounds: "Here's very invaluable information on how The Beatles White Albums were numbered, and the meaning behind all the sequences:The first 25 White Albums were numbered with an “A” prefix and then a series of zeros preceding the number (e.g. A0000009). There are always seven digits following the “A” so if it was a single digit number it would be preceded by six zeroes or if it was a two digit number it would be preceded by five zeroes. It is not known what the “A” was indicative of (it may mean “printed in America" or “Apple” but neither is confirmed). Numbers 26-99 were three digit numbers preceded with a zero and no prefix.Numbers 100 through approximately 209,999 were preceded with the correct number of zeroes to make them a seven digit number (with no letter prefix)Beginning around 210,000 to up near 590,000, they were preceded by a zero and had an “A” prefix.Later copies up to about 1,350,000 remain at seven digits using a leading zero if necessary and are prefixed with a large dot.The next batch from 1,350,000 up to some point past 2,000,000 are prefixed with an “A” but it's a thinner “A” than used earlier.From 2,000,000 to around 2,250,000 some are prefixed with a large dot and some with the “A.”From 2,250,000 up to 3,000,000 the numbers are prefixed with the abbreviation for number (i.e. “No.”). On some of these the “o” in “No.” is raised with the period below it instead of beside it.For the final numbers over 3,000,000 the numbers are prefixed with a wide “A.” " 3. ETCHED MATRIX NUMBERSAfter millions of this album were pressed, the original master tapes were accidentally destroyed. In order to keep record production moving, it was tasked to George Harrison to make a new master. All records pressed after that used George’s new mixes. If you want to hear the original mixes, you will need to acquire a record where the matrix numbers etched in the “Dead Wax”, or “Run Out Zone” with the stamper number as 34 or lower. For example, SWBO-1-101-J46 would hear George’s remixes, but SWBO-1-101-JXX where the XX is populated with any digits 1-34 would play the original mixes. The matrix numbers on this record are all etched except the first "2" (stamped):Side 1 SWBO-1-101-J40 2 * 2Side 2 SWBO-2-101-J41 2 * 2Side 3 SWBO-3-101-J40 2 * 2Side 4 SWBO-4-101-J40 2 * 2 Whew! Yes, I know it’s a lot, but for me it’s a part of the fun of collecting vinyl records. Happy Hunting! If twelve 0000001’s were printed, one going to Ringo Starr and the other eleven were souvenirs for the printing company’s staff, why hasn’t a second 0000001 ever come up for sale. By the way, Ringo’s 0000001 sold at a charity auction for $725,000. Another Fun Fact about "The White Album": Did you know that here is a record store (museum?) in Manhattan (NY, NY) that only stocks The Beatles White Album and never sells them? From HyperAllergic: "The record store experience currently inhabiting Recess gallery’s Soho space feels like any other vinyl hub: bins of albums to flip through in the center, staff picks on the walls, a turntable rotating with scratchy music. Yet this one has a surreal twist: the only thing in stock here is the Beatles’ White Album, and the store doesn’t sell any of them, it only acquires more. A project of New York and Shanghai-based Rutherford Chang, We Buy White Albums includes nearly 700 copies of the 1968 double-LP first edition of the White Album, all the personal collection of Chang. Each album is marked with a distinct serial number on the bottom corner of the starkly designed cover by Richard Hamilton, a totally white cover that’s readily attracted the wandering drawings of (possibly stoned) listeners, the visible stains of coffee cups, and some mold. “Each album has aged uniquely and become an artifact of the last half-century,” Chang explained. “Having an all-white cover, the wear of the albums is especially apparent. In addition to maturing from natural causes, people tend to personalize the albums with writings, drawings, and all kinds of things I could never imagine. The original pressings were also serialized, implying that they are part of a set of over 3 million that are out there. Recess is all about encouraging artist projects that involve process, and Chang’s installation is part of their Session program that invites artists to use their public space to experiment with ongoing work. At the conclusion of the show, all the hundreds of versions of “Helter Skelter,” “Back in the U.S.S.R.,” and other transcendental-fueled tracks from the landmark album will be combined into one that captures all the scratches and dust of the worn records. From this, Chang will press a new double-LP, with its cover art also a composite of all the played records. “People can come in and pick out a copy that will be in the final compilation,” said Maia Murphy, program director of Recess, in discussing the project. “When you listen to his album, it’ll be as if you’re listening to however many copies there are here.”Chang comes in each day to play the records selected by visitors (or by his own choosing), and is also continuing to buy new ones for his collection during the installation. He exclusively buys the first edition, and only those under $20 in order to have some with well-worn character (one even has a cigarette burn all the way through its vinyl, another had its sleeves replaced with paper towels. Each record in the collection is painstakingly catalogued, with its acquisition date, serial number, and condition. This idea of cataloguing and reorganizing cultural material is a major theme in Chang’s work, such as his “Class of 2008” yearbook that collected portraits of all the people who appeared that year in the Wall Street Journal, and the bullhorns he collected and recorded into one cacophony from Beijing vendors in “Boom Propaganda.” "
