Description: Autographed First Day Cover 9/28/1945 by WWII General Alfred M. Gruenther Alfred Maximilian Gruenther served in the Army from 1918-1956, and rose to the rank of Major General during WWII where he served as Dept. Chief of Staff under Gen. Eisenhower and Chief of Staff of the 5th Army and 15th Army Group under Gen. Mark Clark. After the war, he gained promotion to Lt. Gen. as Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and then became the youngest 4-star General (53 years of age) as the Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe under Gen. Eisenhower, SACEUR. He would become SACEUR himself in 1953 until his retirement from service in 1956. The autographed First Day of Issue envelope is stamped with US Army at the Arc de Triomphe postage stamp, and postal cancelled Sep 28, 1945. Some newspaper clippings of the General are also included.
