Description: Group of 4 propaganda leaflets (2 copies of 2 "leafies") dropped over Saigon during the Vietnam War in 1968. The leaflets are dated "8-1-1968" and "1-2-68" so I believe they were dropped in the weeks leading up to the beginning of the Tet Offensive (Jan 31, 1968). Pamphlets are from a collection of ephemera previously owned by a Pan Am/Air Vietnam pilot (with handwritten notes on two of the four). I did my best to translate some of the information from the leaflets (meaning I used Google Translate) and this is what I learned. The leaflet dated 1-2-68 (with the photo on back): "The VC's attack plot was smashed by our Security agencies, up to this moment 660 VCs died on the spot, we captured 57 alive and confiscated a lot of weapons of all kinds.Dear compatriots, right from the first gunshot in the capital Saigon, Gia Dinh, as well as in a few other towns, the ARVN reacted very quickly to promptly pay off the VCs who betrayed the country and brought disaster. for innocent compatriots in the traditional sacred Tet holiday of the nation. There are now a few survivors hiding in densely populated places. Please boldly denounce or arrest them and hand them over to public authorities. The Government and Army of the Republic of Vietnam always protect the lives and property of the compatriots. So, you can rest assured and believe that our Armed Forces have the power to crush any of their vile plots." The second pair of leaflets read: "Dear compatriots nationwide, January 8, 1968 is the national day to launch the SPRING UNION campaign with the aim of:- Calling the children who are fighting in the Viet Cong ranks to return to the National Righteousness;- Use love to eliminate hatred and express the nation's desire for Peace.People across the country should actively participate in the SPRING UNION campaign to shorten the war and restore peace to the country." and on reverse: "Dear compatriots, Each roof of the people is a shadow of JUSTICE tree, a LOVE Center. Please take care and wholeheartedly help fellow soldiers and soldiers on the other side of the Front who want to return to the National Community. People, please direct them to the nearest Government agencies so that this place can take care of them about celebrating Tet with their families." The previous owner was a pilot for Pan Am and flew for Air Vietnam for a period of time in early 1968. He made notes (in pen) on two leaflets, describing how the papers were first dropped from a plane (Jan 8) and the next day appeared in the local newspaper (Jan 9). While the writing dates the leaflets "1967" the text indicates early January 1968. The leaflets measure 3" x 5" and 4 1/4" x 5 1/4" and have minor creasing and age toning; edge wear with partial tearing to corners
