Description: This is an original issue of the "Newport Mercury" from August 2, 1862. It is a rare piece of history which was reporting news, some related to what was taking place during the Civil War This is a must-have for collectors of newspapers and paper items. The newspaper was printed in the United States and is in fair shape for its age. It is a great addition to any collection and a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of the Civil War. If you have time, please go to Wikipedia and search "The Newport Daily News" history. The Newport Mercury was the oldest paper in the USA. It was started by Benjamine Franklin's nephew in 1759. The history of this paper and the printer is fantastic. In 1776 the owner of the paper at that time, Solomon Southwick, printed copies of the Declaration of Independence on that printer. It is now on display at the Museum of Newport History in Newport. The paper is 162 years old. The photographs which I posted best describes that condition.
