Description: Antique 1909 English Cows & Milkmaid Original Engraving - Pencil Signed By Herbert Dicksee 22x29 This is an original engraving pencil signed "Herbert Dicksee" depicting a woman herding 3 cows and a calf down a dirt road presumably on the outskirts of a town that serves as the backdrop. Dicksee is most known for his hunting dogs and also his lions and tigers but he also did some rural town and farm scenes such as this one. These are more rare as they weren't as popular at the time and were produced in lesser quantity. Marked in the print, "Published at 8 Clare St., Bristol by Frost & Reed, Printsetters of Bristol and London, December 4th, 1909" at the top and, "Copyright 1909 by Frost & Reed (Bristol, England) in the United States of America" along the bottom edge. Adapted from online sources: Herbert Thomas Dicksee (1862-1942) was a British painter best known for his sensitive depictions of hunting dogs, particularly Scottish deerhounds in the moors. He also portrayed more exotic animals, accurately rendering lions and tigers he observed at the London Zoo and farm animals and scenes. Born on June 14, 1862 in London, England, Dicksee’s family was well-ingrained into the art world; his father was an artist and his nephew, Sir Frank Dicksee, was the president of the Royal Academy in London from 1924–1928. The artist went on to study at the Slade School of Art in London on a scholarship, and his first painting was exhibited in 1881. Many of Dicksee’s most famous works were transcribed into prints and etchings. He died on February 20, 1942 in Hampstead, England. Measures 22" x 29 1/8".Visible image measures 13 1/4" x 20 1/4".
