One of the most highly requested pieces of track has made it's way to the market in the form of the Atlas Code 100 Curve Turnout. This turnout features nickel silver rails, black plastic ties like the rest of the Atlas Code 100 lineup.The Atlas HO Code 100 Customline Mark IV turnouts are constructed so that regardless of the switch point setting, both branches are powered. Due to this design, the metal frog is insulated and carries no current,. Although most locomotives will span the insulated frog without loss of electrical pickup, engines with an extremely short wheelbase or diesels with single truck pickup may hesitate or stall at the frog. This problem can be easily overcome by equipping the turnouts with an Atlas Snap Relay (Item #200 and available from The Train Connection, www.ebay.com/str/TheTrainConnection), which when wired to the remote switch machine, will energize the frog with the track current of the correct polarity depending on the switch point setting. Atlas Custom-Line Turnouts are prototypically accurate and feature blackened metal frogs and rivet-less switch points that provide superior electrical conductivity. These turnouts are designed for use with Atlas #52 & #53 (remote), #54 & #55 (manual), or #65 Under Table and #66 Deluxe Under Table switch machines. The track ends have cut-outs for easy rail joiner attachment. What's the difference between Atlas HO code 83 & HO code 100 Track? Literally, the code of a piece of track is the height of the rail in thousandths of an inch (meaning code 83 rail is .083" high; code 100 rail is .100" high). The significant difference lies in the physical appearance of the two types of track. Atlas Code 83 track has fine, brown ties and is more prototypical, whereas Code 100 has slightly thicker black ties and has been made for decades. Code 83 track can be easily used with Code 100 track, using the Atlas Transition Track Joiners (Atlas Item #551) also available from The Train Connection.
