Asclepias oenotheroides is aperennial milkweed in the Apocynaceae family. It is commonly known as Zizotes milkweed, Longhorn Milkweed, Primrose Milkweed, and Side-cluster Milkweed. It is native to the southwestern United States and Central America. This milkweed can grow to 18" tall and wide. The flower of this milkweed species is different among milkweeds. The long hoods extend beyond the stigmatic groove and flare or bow outward at the top. It can survive droughts and even the occasional mow over even though it has shallow roots. When it rains, it comes back to life from a drought. Also known as zizotes from “hierba de zizotes” which is the Spanish common name for this plant. Native Americans sometimes used this species to make a poultice for skin rashes. Zones 7-9 Germination Mix seeds and soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name of the seed on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 15-30 days. Remove seeds and soak overnight. Seed should be sown into well-drained, sandy compost and covered to their own depth with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in filtered light and keep moist. Seeds germinate very slowly and may take more than a year to germinate.
