However, the style of Subject Art more closely resembles that of Pietro Bardellino, Italian (1728 – 1806) Since the fourteenth century, paintings of Mary Magdalene have been held in high regard and are sought after by art collectors around the world. An intriguing figure of the Bible, Mary Magdalene has been imagined as a saint and as a sinner. Depictions of Mary Magdalene generally present an expression of mournfulness or repentance, more rarely, that of ecstasy. Generally, she is depicted gazing upward to the viewer’s right, as if witnessing the crucifixion, or searching Heaven in prayer. Artists have most often imagined her with long reddish-brown hair and dressed in red or brown robes, with and without a scarf upon her head. Less common are depictions of Mary Magdalene cloaked in blue, as that color is generally reserved for The Virgin Mary. Depictions of Mary Magdalene nude, or semi-nude with long hair covering all or most of her body reflect the belief that after Jesus’ ascension, Mary Magdalene lived for thirty years as a religious ascetic in the wilderness. Her life consisted of praying and fasting. After many years, her clothes became ragged or completely worn away, but her hair grew long and covered her body.
