Description: Antoine Louis Barye ( 1795-1875); etching with dry point, after his watercolor "Striding Lion". Sheet 12 7/8 x 7 1/2"; plate 7 x 10 1/4". signed in plate LR. On wove paper. Print by Charles Jean Louis Courtry (1846-1897); published in "L'Art", vol. viii, 1877. A copy of this image with lettering - "Lion Marchant" - and publishing info shown above is in the British Museum print collection. I believe this is an earlier, unlettered state (it was listed as "first state" at auction.) Apparently Barye viewed his animal paintings as mere studies, and never attempted to sell them during his lifetime, although after his death 90 works went at auction. Thus, while the dating of the watercolor may be impossible, it is plausible to assume that it came to light after his death, was etched and first appeared in L'Art. Barye - goldsmith, metal engraver, painter, bronze sculptor - will forever be known as the 19th C master of the bronze wild cat. He was called by a noted critic "the Michelangelo of the menagerie". This is a lovely impression of his famed watercolor, now at the Boston Museum of art. Very fine condition; a thin strip of matting tape along top margin. please visit my ebay sites:FINE ART PRINTS - https://www.ebay.com/usr/rufus1226 BOOKS - https://www.ebay.com/usr/judefe16 https://www.ebay.com/usr/judefe-65 https://www.ebay.com/usr/j18-jule https://www.ebay.com/usr/judefe14 RECORDS - https://www.ebay.com/usr/juledefelice_0 STAMPS AND STUFF - https://www.ebay.com/usr/judefe-8
