Description: On offer here is this fantastic FLEMISH CARVING OF A JESTER Made in Belgium circa 1890. Made sometime around the turn of the last century this carving was probably made in the town of Mechelen just north of Brussels in Belgium. This was the Centre for carvings of this type in the 18th and 19th century. It would originally have been mounted on a piece of furniture as pillars to give decoration and support to the top cupboard. It depicts a seated jester wearing a medieval jesters costume complete with hat and shoes, it is carved in very fine detail. At some point in it's life it has been made into a lamp, so this would be easy to rewire if so desired. SIZE (approx)Height: 35cmWidth: 12cmDepth: 10cm CONDITIONObviously this item is not new and there may be signs of wear that come with age however the carving is in very good condition, there are no repairs although it was converted into a lamp at some time. There is no woodworm, the only damage is a chip to the wood on the base, though this damage is quite old, possibly even at the time of carving. The colour is nice and even.
