ANTIQUE MIXED LOT OF 5 GLASS TOOTHPICK HOLDERS U. S. CAMBRIDGE RUBY STAIN EAPG

Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE ANTIQUE MIXED LOT OF 5 GLASS TOOTHPICK HOLDERS U. S. CAMBRIDGE RUBY STAIN EAPGHere we have the start of a wonderful little glass toothpick holder collection, with five (5) pieces for one price. The five are as follows, described left to right in the 1st photo: 1.) Round cylinder shape with a band of hobstars around the base. Unknown pattern & maker. Could even be a bar glass. It has been factory ground & polished on the underside of the foot to assure it sits level; which is a clear sign of a quality made piece of glass. Circa 1910. There is a large repair (to a chip) on the underside of the foot – see the close-up of this. There is also some very minor roughness (tiny flea bites) to the band of pattern around the foot and one very tiny flea bite to the top rim. 2.) This one is decorated with ruby stain and was made by the US Glass Company and it is further decorated with the verbiage “Souvenir Chicago, Ill.,” which is worn and very hard to see, and further decorated with gold trim around the base. The pattern is known as Lacy Medallion or Colorado, which was produced in many different shapes and forms. This pattern is pictured in the book Glass Toothpick Holders: Second Edition by Neila & Tom Bredehoft and Jo & Bob Sanford on page 192. Circa 1900. Light signs of use, wear to ruby stain & gold decoration, and a couple of tiny flea bites to the foot. 3.) A 2-handled toothpick holder. It was made by the Cambridge Glass Company formerly of Cambridge, Ohio and is known as their “Sweetheart” pattern. It is a quality piece of pressed crystal or clear colored glass and signed “NEAR CUT” on the bottom inside – see my photos. This pattern is pictured in the book 1000 Toothpick Holders: A Collectors Guide by William Heacock on page 47 as figure # 720. There are multiple chips to the points on the top rim - see the photos. There is also a “heat check” (stress crack) where one of the handles meets the top portion of the body – see the close-up. Although there is a slight loss of glass in this area, I do not believe this is from exterior damage but rather occurred as an annealing flaw during the making of the glass. I also believe the glass is stable as is. Otherwise, there are no other chips, flea bites, cracks, hairlines, or repairs but I do see a hint of sun coloring to the glass. 4.) This is a tiny size and was made by King Glass company, formerly of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the pattern is known as “King’s Royal”. It is made in crystal or clear colored glass and is a quality made piece of pressed glass as evidenced by the fact that it has been factory ground and polished on the underside of the foot so it sits level. There is a toothpick holder of this same shape and pattern pictured in the book Encyclopedia Of Victorian Colored Glass Book 1: Toothpick Holders from A to Z by William Heacock as Photo # 261. It dates to circa 1900 and is in mint condition. 5.) This one is an elegant piece of blown glass with a hand crimped top rim. The maker is unknown, but the pattern is known as “Myrtle.” It is a quality piece of blown glass. This pattern is pictured in the book Glass Toothpick Holders: Second Edition by Neila & Tom Bredehoft and Jo & Bob Sanford on page 227. I will mention that this book does not list this toothpick holder as having been made in clear colored glass. This one is circa 1920’s-1930’s. There is one very tiny flea bite to the edge of the foot. Otherwise, there are no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There are some very light signs of use to the body and the underside of the foot that are consistent with a piece of glass of this age. These were all part of my mother’s toothpick holder collection and according to her records she acquired these between 1979 and 2008.If you are not familiar with the NTHCS (National Toothpick Holder Collectors’ Society) it is a great organization and you can learn more about them and collecting toothpick holders at their website.I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.
