Description: Antique German Chromolithograph titled "The Saviour of the World", depicts a portrait of Jesus and is an original production from about the year 1860. The Colours are still bright and clear. This print is perfect for those who are interested in Antique Art and Religious Iconography. Antique German Religious Chromolithograph, along the bottom it reads "Le Sauveur du Monde, Erloser der Welt, The Saviour of the World, El Salvador del Mundo, Verlosser der Wereld" (these are no longer visible in the frame) It is in generally very good condition, there are some small indentations in the top left corner of the print but they are hardly noticeable, some small marks to frame, please see pictures. Originating from lithography, chromolithography is a method for making multi-colour prints and includes all lithographs. Lithographers sought to find a way to print on flat surfaces with the use of chemicals instead of relief or intaglio printing. Depending on the number of colours present, a chromolithograph could take months to produce. To make what was once referred to as a “chromo”, a lithographer, using a finished portrait, gradually built and corrected the print to look as much like the painting in front of him, sometimes using dozens of layers. As a process it can be time-consuming and cumbersome, contingent upon the skill of the lithographer.
