Description: ~*~Hello and thank you for looking~*~ ~Absolutely stunning, very rare and wonderful ~ This gorgeous textile is a fully intact, antique French bed canopy, dating 1825. This textile uses a toile , manufactured by Ferdinand Favre et Cie in 1825. It is a very rare toile de Nantes titled "L'elite des Braves" ( the elite of the brave men). This toile has been found only printed in this lovely purple shade of madder and sepia. The purple tone of the printing is a gorgeous aubergine purple. There are very few surviving examples of the full repeat, and this textile has a many full repeats. A very exciting textile find. This toile was engraved using a drawing of Francisque Grenier ( 1793-1867) who was a very popular lithographer in the time for military scenes. The scenes represent the most prized weapons of the First Empire as well as combat scenes. This textile is fully intact. The toile is backed in homespun French linen. It is 100% hand stitched. The sides have wonderful valances for the side of the bed and the top corners are pocketed. The bottom of this textile would have been used as the back drop, behind the bed. So, the textile would have been seen behind the bed and then it would have been covered the top, with the valances hanging from the top of the 4 poster bed. . The original ties are even still intact which would have held back the curtains to the sides! ~* ~ It is an extraordinary textile. There is a very light cotton batting between the two layers. The homespun backing is two shades, one length is slightly darker than the other, it's gorgeous! I have many more photographs of this textile, so if you are interested, please email me and I can happily email further photographs of this textile. Wonderful for use on any antique bed or stunning used as wall decoration, curtains and many other creative uses. Ideal for any period interior. ( toile 163) MEASUREMENTS: The upper length ( with the valanced sides) measures : 43 inches wide, from pocketed corner to pocketed corner. The valances extend on both sides and top and are approx. 12 inches deep on all 3 sides. There is a stunning hand stitched linen tape that runs along the scallops of the valances. The top section with the valances is 68 inches long. The canopy end of this textile is 68 inches long, so in total the length of this extraordinary textile is 136 inches long ( 11.3 feet long). The toile, canopy section on the end is 50 inches wide with homespun that extends the width an additional 2 inches on each side. There is a wonderful hand stitched monogram in the bottom corner of this textile. CONDITION : This textile is in such beautiful condition for its age. It is in as found condition with light storage dust. The bottom canopy section has a large hole in the toile ( that does not penetrate the homespun) that measures approx. 8 inches by 4 inches. Near the bottom of the bed cover ( valanced section) there are storage marks that I am certain will not wash ( please see photographs). Along the edges of the homespun are some rust marks. There is a hole on the edge where the valance meets the canopy on the very edge that can be easily hand stitched closed. There is light fading on the toile in places. There are other small holes in the toile and some smaller holes on the homespun backing. There is an additional flap under the left valance that was used to nail this textile in place on the bed. This has holes and rust marks. ( can send additional photographs) If the exact details of the condition of this textile are important to your purchase, the best way to view would be for me to send photographs directly to you, so please don't hesitate to ask! A rare and wonderful find. ~*~ . ~ Please see my other Antique French fabric auctions by clicking View Sellers Other Items~*~
