Description: Antique French four-glass shelf clock Case: Brass, beveled glass, marked France Case dimensions in inches, roughly, and including feet, hardware, etc: H: 10.5 W: 7.75 D: 5.75 Dial: The Van Heusen Charles Co, Albany N.Y., France Movement: Brass, with multiple marks: On the back of the movement:C.H. (believe this to be Charles Hour)Japy Freres round markMade in France5925 4 6 Elsewhere:Brocot (2 spots)25 Beautiful heavy French four-glass shelf clock made for the Van Heusen Charles Company of Albany New York. Movement is marked by Japy Freres and CH, which I believe to be Charles Hour. The escapement is marked Brocot. There are markings on the back of the dial but they're partially hidden. I found all these markings fascinating so I pinged the experts on the NAWCC forums. One replied and explained to me the awesome story of how antique clocks were commissioned: "Van Heusen would have ordered the clock (and several others) from an agent in the US - in turn, they would have ordered the clocks from various makers in France (in this case Charles Hour) who would have bought the Japy movement and fitted it out into this clock. It's nice to see a full set of stamps like this, that show clearly the history of the clock" From my limited research I believe this to be from the late 19th century. Case shows discoloration on the brass (I haven't polished anything). Glass panels are beveled. One shows two very tiny bubbles in the glass. There is a chip to the glass on the top of the rear panel. Has key and pendulum. Read note below about the pendulum! ***UPDATE on the pendulum below*** READ: Pendulum contains mercury. The pendulum is either original or very old and it is unmarked. The two glass vials contain liquid mercury, not imitation steel rods. It is illegal to send mercury through the US mail. Your options: 1) I will dismantle the pendulum, remove the mercury vials, and send the safe glassless pendulum with the clock. I will assume you want me to remove the glass vials unless I hear otherwise from you after the auction ends! 2) I can send the pendulum separately through UPS. The lowest price I have been quoted is about $15 but this may vary depending on your location. If you do indeed want the mercury, please contact me before the auction ends so that I can quote the extra shipping charge for you. You will be billed separately for this. Contact me with any questions. Clock is untested and therefore sold as-is or for parts. **If you have requests for how this clock is protected in the package, please let me know immediately after your purchase! Without instruction it will be shipped as is, assembled, and protected to the best of my ability.**
