Description: Antique Famille Rose Medallion porcelain plate. It is stamped "Decorated in Hong Kong" on the back, signifying it was made around the 1920's. The paint colors and hand painted details are very good. It measures 10" diameter. It is in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. I have numerous similar antique Famille Rose plates that I am selling individually as each one is hand painted with very subtle differences. For centuries, Chinese porcelain export has been famous amongst collectors and interior designers. The Rose Medallion pattern of porcelain first emerged in the 1850s and it was largely exported to Europe and America due to increased demand. The Europeans were huge fans of the intricate designs displayed on the porcelain. The name given to this pattern of porcelain was not because it consisted of a rose but it was named Rose Medallion because of the color. The actual flower painted on this porcelain is the national flower of China, a peony! Famille Rose is French for The Rose Family. It consists of a central medallion, usually a bird or peony, encircling four or more panels of flowers, birds, or people. The panels are referred to as reserves and are often demarcated by intricate margins laced with green or pink florals. The spaces between the reserves are filled with butterflies, bats, and florals.
