Description: A Fine Kerman Carpet, South East Persia, Wool on Cotton Foundation. CIRCA 1910 -The reverse knotting detail confirms this to be of the origin. Blue field with an all-over design of columns of palmettes linked by a lozenge vine lattice supported by meandering curvilinear vines issuing palmettes, flower heads and leaves ending in arabesque scrolls supported by cloud bands, within a red border enclosing continuous 'in and out' polychrome palmettes linked by curvilinear vines issuing flower heads, makers signature to one end. This is a fine Kerman carpet, possibly made in Ravar, though the larger scale pattern suggests that this was probably woven in one of the best workshops in the city of Kerman itself and bears the signature of the master weaver in recognition of its superior quality in all respects. The design is based on a classical style of design as seen in 17th century Safavid court weavings, and displays all the iconography associated with that time. The pattern whist being complex, is also open and spacious making the pattern easy to read and meaningful. The colours are from the traditional Kerman palette, superbly juxtaposed in such a way as to maximise the visual impact of the composition. The cotton fringe ends are not original and appear to have been added later, no doubt added to protect the substance of the carpet. This is an accomplished work of Kerman weaving made during the 'revivalist' period of Persian carpet production, and is duly signed by the master weaver. This is truly a spectacular rug. I don’t want to seem brash, but if I can’t find a buyer who will pay a price within the appraised auction value window I will hold onto it indefinitely because I really adore the rug. Have appraisal from Barnaby’s. Will make available to serious buyer. But, I suppose if you can’t somewhat evaluate its quality on your own you probably aren’t going to purchase the rug anyway. Antique Fine Kerman’s of this quality and condition are rare to find. I acquired from a solid well established estate where the carpet has been in the family for 3 generations. Thanks for looking. Condition: as expected there is some color fading after 115 years but colors are still vibrant. Some pile wear where pile is thin in spots. But, compared to most rugs I’ve seen this age it’s about as good as it gets. Fringe has been restored at some point ( good thing ). No noticeable stains.
