Description: Antique Chinese Mid-Height Lacquered Ming Style Wedding Cabinet This is a 19th century lacquered “Wedding Cabinet,” which, in ancient China, was made as a dowry by a bride’s family, with its size and embellishment an indication of the father’s wealth and social standing. This mid-height cabinet was handcrafted from the core of an elm wood tree with Ming dynasty simplicity, straight lines and minimal decoration. The cabinet’s structure, which is consistent with traditional, handcrafted Chinese furniture, confirms its authenticity: the two large, removable doors supported by wooden hinges; and tenon and mortise joinery requiring no glue, nails or other mechanical joining device. The doors feature a large, round bronze face-plate with decorative pulls that open to reveal great storage possibilities, including a drawer with bronze pulls. The doors have been retrofitted with pivot hinges and slides that lets them open 90 degrees and slide out of the way into the sides of the cabinet when being used as a TV console or functional bar. Small holes have been cut in the rear panel to accommodate power cords. This solid piece has been well-maintained in its beautifully-aged, original lacquer finish.
