Description: A very decorative antique Italian maiolica handled potpourri pottery basket with lion head masks dating from around 1870. This rare and unusual basket is lightly potted in a red colored clay and stands raised on a round pedestal foot with an unglazed foot rim. The edge is molded with floral like decoration with narrow stem and wide round basket shaped bowl has a raised looped braided handle. The body of the bowl is molded in relief with lion masks set between garlands above a relief molded leaf border and with a raised rim with detailed painted patterning to the body in typical maiolica style. The inner bowl is applied with three painted nibs on which the leaf molded and pierced cover sits. The basket has a yellow cockerel rooster mark to the base and is numbered 28. In very good to excellent condition with no visible chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. There are a couple of very small flea bites on the edge of pedestal base consistent with age and use. There is a hand written note from the previous owner that was tucked inside, I don't know it it pertains to this piece, but it reads: "Scaldim (?) for carrying hot coals to keep hands warm" Will be packed, shipped and insured with care.
